On a personal note, I think the Giant Pacific Octopus is one of the coolest creatures in the ocean. If you dive or snorkel, there is nothing better than coming across an octopus when they are on the move — or in full “camo” mode while hiding (if you’re lucky enough to spot it).
According to National Geographic, “The giant Pacific octopus grows bigger and lives longer than any other octopus species. The size record is held by a specimen that was 30 feet across and weighed more than 600 pounds. Averages are more like 16 feet and 110 lbs.” I don’t think I would have wanted to encounter the size record while spearfishing for halibut…
