Stone Grey Steelhead Short Sleeve Tee – Steelhead are native to cold-water tributaries across North America and Northeast Asia. A prized sport fish from Northern California to Alaska, they share the same species (Oncorhynchus mykiss) as Rainbow Trout, but follow a very different life cycle.
Unlike Rainbow Trout that remain freshwater-bound, Steelhead migrate to the ocean and return to spawn multiple times over a 3 to 4 year cycle. That ocean run gives them a different presence, both in form and behavior.
I illustrated a spawning male Steelhead with its distinct hooked jaw to avoid confusion with Rainbow Trout, which can appear similar in artwork. The design stays simple and intentionally color-free, reflecting the Steelhead’s more muted tones compared to its freshwater cousin.
When it comes to taste, it is a toss up. Steelhead lean richer, closer to ocean salmon, while Rainbow Trout carry a cleaner alpine flavor.
