My connection to market squid started on the shores of La Jolla. I came across them washed up near one of my favorite surf spots and, like most good ideas, curiosity took over. A few friends and I gathered some, figured out how to clean them, and learned our way around cooking squid together. To this day, calamari still brings back memories of those early seaside sessions and shared meals.
Up here, the arrival of the squid boats in Monterey Bay is one of the clearest signs that seasons are changing. Seeing the lights offshore, knowing what’s happening beneath the surface, and then watching squid move through the water with shifting color and calm precision never gets old. That mix of familiarity and wonder is what inspired this design.
