How the artwork is made

The artwork in this collection begins with observation, then memory. Drawings, paintings, and block prints are created from lived experience rather than reference photos. Countless hours sitting on a board, drifting in currents, or bobbing on a boat creates a deeper understanding of how water behaves.

Over time, those impressions turn into line work, spacing, and layered forms that capture how water feels in motion. The goal is not realism. It is translation, turning the sea into pattern and rhythm you can wear.

A big day at Ocean Beach

One of the early pieces in this collection was inspired by surfing a big day at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. There were only a few people out, and the current was hectic. The spacing between surfers could feel enormous, sometimes close to a mile.

On days like that, the last thing you want is to get caught inside. The rhythm becomes patience, awareness, and clean decision making. That sense of distance and movement shows up throughout the Water Collection.
